  • Leading cause of species in the tropical rain forests being threatened or eliminated:
    Livestock grazing.*
  • "Rainforest beef is typically found in fast food hamburgers or processed beef products. In both 1993 and 1994 the US imported over 200,000,000 pounds of fresh and frozen beef from Central Americn countries. Two thirds of these countries' rainforrests have been cleared, primarily to raise cattle whose stringy, cheap meat is exported to profit the US food industry. When it enters the US, the beef is not labeled with its country of origin, so there is no way to trace its sources." (Rain Forest Action Network)*
  • Though Central American beef exports to the US have declined in recent years, they still approach 100,000,000 pounds annually.*
