January 3, 2003

Happy 2003. Hopefully it's treating you well.

To start the New Year off right, I've got some suggestions…

Some last treats for the kids:
Annie
Annie is running until January 6th at Teatre Victòria in Spanish 15-30 euros.

and of course…

The Three Kings Parade

They sail into the harbor at around dusk, and are driven around town in an open carriage, throwing sweets to the cheering crowds. (Often hard candies, so watch out). The route is published in the morning papers, and lined with crowds of familes. There is also a toy market on Gran Via. The next day, El Día dels Reis (6 January), children awake to their presents.
5 Jan, evening, 6 Jan, all day, Kings normally arrive at Moll de la Fusta, then parade up the Rambla to Plaça Sant Jaume, and continue to Passeig de Gràcia; detailed route changes each year. Information: Centre d'Informació de la Virreina & 010. free

While you're downtown:
Concerts of the Chiming Clock
Above the palace of the Generalitat are the 49 bells of the chiming clock, called the carillon. Originally installed 76 years ago and later replaced by a larger one in 1976 concerts of the carillon are held throughout the year. The next hour-long concert will be held 5 Jan, featuring more classical works by such composers as Mozart, as well as Spanish ones. Jan 5th noon, Palau de la Generalitat, Plaça Sant Jaume tel. 93 402 4600. free

To sign up for a library card (asociarte) all you need is a passport, a passport-sized photo, and proof that you live here (a bill or something with your name and address).
